Don't be suprised. It was only a matter of time. And 3-points to Google for once again leading the was into the future. I wonder how long until we all are downloading mp3's straight from Google search results?

Josh Freese - Uber Drummer
Former NiN Drummer Takes Album Promotion A Step FurtherI have wrestled with the idea of giving the content away but selling the context for a few months now. This article on mashable did a remarkable job of putting the match to rest. There is nothing like seeing ideas in action for yourself. I was thinking along the lines of videos of recording and song writing sessions and maybe writing a custom song. I was sort of stuck. I mean, it is hard getting over that whole album/CD thing.
Josh Freese has changed all that. IMHO, he has just nailed his thesis to the church door. Personally, his courage and creativity have opened a pandora's box inside my mind. Seriously, click the link above and read the list of goods he is offering.
- $50 Private Phone Call
- Lunch and Dinner Dates
- Hang Out at the Strip Club
- Go with him on Tour
Pay enough and he will even join your band for a month. Now that is what I call context. You can not download those experiences off bittorrent.
What ideas do you have?

Last month I joined
ccMixter, a community of music creators that share and remix each others original works licensed under
Creative Commons.
ccMixter is a community music site featuring remixes licensed under Creative Commons where you can listen to, sample, mash-up, or interact with music in whatever way you want. -ccMixter
Like most new users of websites, I dabbled. Posted my own
samples and made a beat using
Shagrugge's Ill Beat Loop. I thought I understood the power of such a community, although, I could not feel it emotionally. Two weeks ago I received an email from a ccMixter member. The email was a notification of an upcoming
music contest. I signed up, then received the user name of a member. I had to produce a remix of this member's work. My production would have to be at least 50% sourced from his music and samples.
I picked through his uploads and found some gems. Using Ableton Live 7 I patched together a track with interesting change-ups and vocal samples. The only thing I added was some short keyboard riffs from Camel Audio's new Alchemy VSTi.
I uploaded the
track on Feb 16th. And listened to the remix made of my work. That's when the magic happened. I felt the emotional power of the community and finally truly understood the implications. This community I was involved in allowed for my music compositions to change form and evolve over time. No longer was a track of mine a static thing. ccMixter has the power to give music new life.
I hate to use the term Crowd Sourcing because what actually occured was much more intimate. Maybe "Viral Collaboration" would be a more fitting term. When I uploaded my entry for the contest the upload form provided a very easy way of giving credit to the sources of my work. The progeny of my works is listed on the site. Both what works I sampled from and what works used samples from my music. And in this way samples may be mashed-up and remix several times by any number of members. Even their remixes of my work may be remixed by another member, and so on.
The way original works get re-imagined on ccMixter reminds me of Chris Anderson's
Long Tail. An electronic jungle production may be remixed into a hip hop beat and so on. I think this fulfills the idea that a product could be repackaged across multiple niche markets; the sum of which may be greater than the mass markets.
ccMixter provides leadership in an industry sorely without. I predict such communities will be invaluable to future artists and fans alike. Especially sense fans are no longer just fans, but content creators in their own right.

Don't know what to say about this. I mean if you was going to produce a song for public transportation bike racks...

So what if you got paid based on how many times your song is downloaded? What are you doing to secure your place in this future?

To kick off my experiment with a new business strategy I have release Rokamic Beatz 2009: A Street Odyssey Beat Tape produced exclusively by me. The beats are under a Creative Commons license that allows anyone to remix, sample, or use the beats for their own commerical projects or songs.
The Street Odyssey Sample Library will be also be released within a week for use by anyone wanting to create their own beats.
Rokamic Beats 2009: A Street Odyssey is available as a free download at
mininova.org. Mininova is a bittorrent directory site. If you have never used bittorrent before it is just like Kazaa or Limewire. Just install uTorrent then go to the mininova.org link above. Then click the download this torrent link on the Rokamic Beats 2009: A Street Odyssey page. uTorrent will ask were you want to save the mp3's. Then uTorrent will download the beats.
My beat tapes and sample libraries can always be accessed through the sidebar to the right of this website under the headings Rokamic's Sample Stream and Rokamic's Beattape Stream.
If you make some music with my shit let me know. Send the music to me and i'll forward your tracks through my streams and channels.
